Drugs
& Alcohol During Pregnancy
Avoid taking any medication or drug during your pregnancy, unless
your doctor or nurse-midwife orders it for you. Some medicines may
cause birth defects or endanger your baby's health. If you take
a medicine regularly, make sure the doctor or nurse giving you prenatal
care knows about it.
Street drugs, such as cocaine, marijuana, speed, LSD, "downers",
opium, and heroin can be harmful to you and your baby. Even legal
drugs, such as alcohol and nicotine in cigarettes, can seriously
harm your baby.
If you are using drugs now and want to stop, the Family Health Line
can help. We provide supportive telephone counseling, information
on the effects of specific drugs during pregnancy, and referrals
for drug treatment. Calls to the Family Health Line are confidential.
